TCF Canada Exam Structure
Listening Comprehension
The listening comprehension section of the TCF exam is 35 minutes long and includes 39 multiple-choice questions. You will listen to short recordings of someone speaking in French and will have to select the answer that aligns with what is being discussed.
This section of the exam is meant to test your ability to understand spoken French. In our classes, we will go over all of the common expressions, questions, and vocabulary that you might hear in this part of the exam.
Reading Comprehension
The reading comprehension section of the TCF exam is 60 minutes long and includes 39 multiple-choice questions. For this part of the exam, you will be given a series of short French passages to read. Based on what you read, you will then have to select the answer that best reflects the meaning of the text.
The text you might be given could include snippets from articles, books, or text specifically for the exam. In our classes, we’ll help you get comfortable with the types of texts used in the exam and teach you strategies for identifying key information, tone, and intent.
Writing Skills
The written expression section of the TCF exam is 60 minutes long and includes 3 short writing tasks. The writing tasks will provide you with a simple prompt that you will have to respond to in the best of your ability.
This section of the exam is meant to test how clearly you can express the language and your ideas in writing. In our classes, we’ll guide you through common formats used in this section and help you improve your grammar, sentence structure, and clarity.
Verbal Expression
The oral expression section of the TCF exam is 12 minutes long and is conducted one-on-one with an examiner. You will complete 3 speaking tasks, where you will be asked to answer questions and prompts in French.
The speaking portion focuses on relatively casual and common French vocabulary. In our classes, we’ll practice common question types, review useful vocabulary, and help you build confidence for speaking clearly and naturally during the exam.
